Puberty: The first period

First, you should know that each girl’s body develops at its own pace and responds to puberty in its own unique way. You probably have friends who got their first period before you and others whose period has not yet started. Every girl is different and this is perfectly normal. Some girls start their menstruation as early as 9 years old, while others don’t start until they are 16, or even older. However, if you haven’t had your first period (also called menarche) by the time you are 16, it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor.
