Contraception: Preventing pregnancy

To avoid pregnancy naturally, we must pay particular attention to the so-called fertile window; i.e., the time interval in which ovulation and fertilization are possible. As the life of an egg is about 24 hours and sperm can survive up to five days in a woman’s reproductive organs, the fertile window extends about five days around ovulation. The key is to be able to predict the time of ovulation. There are different methods to do this, which can either be used to prevent pregnancy by avoiding sexual intercourse at this time, or to increase the chances of pregnancy by having unprotected sex at that time. Given the unpredictable nature of the menstrual cycle, the calendar method is not recommended if one wishes to avoid a pregnancy.
